Wall Street dropped on Thursday, leaving the S&P 500 marginally lower for a year marked by record highs as well as a major selloff.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 2.23 percent for the year, its first annual decline since 2008.
The Nasdaq Composite gained 5.73 percent after surpassing levels not seen since the dot-com bubble in 2000.
