The US equity markets closed off their best levels Thursday,
but the major indices still managed to finish higher as investors
cheered a batch of better-than-expected earnings and an upbeat jobless
claims report.The Dow Jones industrial average rose 24.50 points to 14,700.80. The S&P 500 gained 6.37 points to close at 1,585.16. The Nasdaq Composite gained 20.33 points to 3,289.99.
